Protect Your Clients, Protect Yourself

Five-Step Solution

1

Take responsibility or assign an individual or individuals to be responsible for safeguards in your office and a privacy policy under the FTC Financial Privacy Rule.

2

Assess the risks to personally identifiable information in your office, including your operations, physical environment, computer systems and employees, if applicable. Make a list of all the locations where you keep taxpayer/personal information.

3

Write a plan of how you will safeguard taxpayer/personal information. Put appropriate safeguards in place and reporting mechanisms for incidents in your state and your clients states.

4

Use only service providers who have policies in place to also maintain an adequate level of information protection defined by the FTC Safeguards Rule.

5

Monitor, evaluate and adjust your security programs as your business  or circumstances change, as well as incorporate data back-up to be able to have business continuity in a disaster.
